Interactive Simulations for Teaching Physics
Malus's Law
Authors: Ms. Giselle dos Santos Castro - Federal University of Ceara - UFC
Dr. Nildo Loiola Dias - Federal University of Ceara - UFC
CONTROLS:
- Click on the point on the edge of the polarizer and move to change the polarization angle.
- Click on the point on the edge of the analyzer and move to change the angle of inclination of the analyzer.
DESCRIPTION OF THE SIMULATION:
This simulation allows measuring the intensity of light that passes through a polarizer and then through an analyzer as a function of their relative angular positions, thus verifying Malus' Law. A graduated polarizer shows the front view of the light source after passing through the polarizer. This polarizer can be rotated by clicking on the point on its edge and moving. A graduated analyzer shows the front view of the light source after passing through the polarizer and analyzer. The analyzer can be rotated by clicking on the point on its edge and moving. The intensity of the light source can change when the simulation is reset.
For an analysis of the data, consult one of the proposed ACTIVITY GUIDE.
